Antigua offers some of the most charming and picture-perfect beauty spots you could ever wish to see, along with maintaining a tranquil, relaxed, and peaceful vibe as soon as you arrive. Life really does move incredibly slow out here where you need nothing more than to hear the peaceful rhythm of the waves splashing in the sea and the calming sound of the steel drums echoing in the distance.

Beaches you will be spoilt for choice and there are many historical attractions to explore, Nelson's Dockyard is just one. The history of the island combines the colonial with elements of English heritage. You can experience off-roading and waterbased activities, or why not try your hand at paddleboarding before experiencing the infusion of English traditions from the locals playing cricket to hotels serving high tea.

I feel incredibly lucky that I was able to enjoy Antigua with my family as part of a winter getaway when I was growing up. We used to stay at The Hawksbill by Rex Resorts and Galley Bay Resort and Spa where it was home to the most welcoming locals you could ever wish to meet. The island has changed considerably since then, it now boasts grand resorts such as Jumby Bay Island, but whilst still oozing style and elegance. It is very much a dream of mine to travel back there as a family with my husband and our two girls. 

Key highlights I remember fondly of the trip were:

• The wedding of my aunt and uncle, it was the most magical day and gave me inspiration for when we got married. Certainly plenty of rum punch on that day!
• Water skiing across the depths of the turquoise water (with my skis tied together as I was so young)
• Friendships formed that still live on today 
• A sunset catamaran cruise where we indulged in the finest cuisine, seafood especially, and I tried Conch for the first time and watching the dolphins skim the tops of the ocean so elegantly
• Learning to snorkel with my dad on top of the untouched coral beds
• Visiting Shirley Heights to take in the breathtaking scenery it has to offer of the English Harbour and bay below
• Sitting across from the Rolling Stones at dinner one evening (I now understand why my parents were so star struck!)

Antigua really was the idyllic paradise where dreams came true and memories as a family live on today
