We combined a mainland stay with Thailand’s beautiful beaches, with regular domestic flights it’s so easy it’s almost as easy as getting a tuk-tuk but much more comfortable! Even the more remote islands are worth the journey as you transfer to your hotel via traditional long-tail boat.
Before going to one of Thailand’s gold and white-sand beaches to take it easy with a cocktail in hand or a massage in a beachfront sala before heading out into the emerald waters or snorkelling and diving in protected marine parks. Inland, we explored the temples in the shape of Isaan’s Khmer complexes and the UNESCO-protected ancient capital of Siam at Sukhothai.
Thailand’s food is incredible, such as the street markets in Bangkok and the Green Lung, the Bang Krachao green space is located in the outskirt district of Phra Pradaeng, and is an absolutely fantastic place within the city limits to explore. While in Bangkok, be sure to walk through temples home to larger than life Buddha statues, then drink in the views of Bangkok’s clamorous streets from a slick rooftop bar, or people watch from a lively spot on vibrant Khao San Road.
Why not take a trip “up north” and you will notice that it’s a different realm altogether, food and cuisine has a more earthy flavour and the lush mountainous vistas replace sea and skyscrapers. We visited the northern capital, Chiang Mai, where you can immerse yourself in the hum of its night market and learn about the lives of local hill tribes.
In Chiang Mai you can feel the atmosphere and enjoy a fabulous cooking class. Doi Suthep is a constant part of life in Chiang Mai a regal mountain that overlooks the city from the northwest, providing commanding views of the surrounding countryside and Chiang Mai from its summit.
Onward from Chiang Mai one of the many trips we took was to see the elephants rescued from years of mistreatment and neglect both physically and mentally. In a one-on-one experience with our guides, a small group of villagers we spent a day walking, feeding and washing these adorable mammals. We were welcomed into the homes of the villagers for lunch. It was an unforgettable experience, and confirmation to us that we were in the midst of a life-changing experience.
